Article by Nicole Erini: Once your feet hit the ground in Amsterdam, you can tell why the Dutch are so fond of the marvel we’ve come to know as the Dutch EDM scene. And once you get to know the Dutch, you can tell why this scene and the musical institution of ADE flourished in the Netherlands; the place is more than fertile for culture and all sorts of Arts (if you haven’t got an idea, read about Amsterdam in the next UrbanStyleMag issue- or go ahead and book your tickets to the Dutch capital and see for yourself).

Whereas in the UK, the history of electronic music is speckled with anti-state and rebellious protests as well as tabloid-turmoils often related to drug use, and in other countries accompanied by some sort of political or social apathy, the Dutch see their EDM scene as one more source of national pride. Well, no wonder they do; their zealously promoted, virtuoso domestic artists feature amongst the most celebrated ones, globally. Furthermore, the sensational electronic experience that is ADE, is the world's biggest club festival & conference.

This year ADE had a phenomenal success, attracting a record 300.000 festival visitors and 5.000 conference delegates from around the world. With the international dance industry, music lovers, artists and media present at the 5-day event which took place from the 16th  to the 20th of October, ADE 2013 was truly a global music gathering. We’re talking about hundreds of DJ's and acts performing in Amsterdam's finest venues, cafés, record stores, lounges and art galleries, as well as thousands of key professionals and a passionate festival audience eager to hear the best that dance music has to offer.

Speaking about numbers, the official fact list of ADE 2013 is as follows:

Artists

2,156

Festival visitors

300,000

Conference visitors

5,000

Playground visitors

7,500

Clubs & venues

115

Events

300

Journalists & media

460

Speakers

317

Nationalities

75

And speaking about EDM prodigies and a truly lucky, passionate audience,  the music fans had the chance to choose from a vast number of artists, events, venues and nearly every music genre. Some of the names that made the attendants’ shoes come to the end of their lives , were: Adam Beyer (SE), Afrojack (NL), Armin van Buuren (NL), Black Coffee (ZA), Calvin Harris (GB), Carl Cox (GB), Carl Craig (US), Chris Liebing (DE), Chuckie (NL), Danny Tenaglia (US), David Guetta (FR), DJ Shadow (US), Goldfish (ZA), Gui Boratto (BR), Guy Gerber (IL), Henrik Schwarz (DE), Joris Voorn (NL), Laurent Garnier (FR), Maceo Plex (US), Martyn (NL), Maya Jane Coles (GB), Michael Mayer (DE), Nina Kraviz (RU), Paul Oakenfold (GB), Pete Tong (GB), Richie Hawtin (CA), Seth Troxler (US), Solomun (DE), Tiësto (NL) Tom Trago (NL) - and many more. The artist who was voted #1 DJ in the world during DJMag Top 100 show, was the Dutch -Du(tc)h- DJ Hardwell.

For both industry and fans though, ADE is not only the definitive destination to enjoy the best electronic music, but also the best way to stay up to date on the latest developments and trends, get in touch with brands and artists, be inspired by creative thinkers and experience to the maximum, everything that the global electronic music scene and industry encompasses. ADE 2013 made that feasible once again, by a series of special events and festival features, such as ADE Playground, ADE Conferences and ADE Green, amongst others.

The utterly exciting, highly anticipated feature ADE Playground gained –as expected- enormous success.  The daytime program transformed Amsterdam into the biggest pop- up store on the planet and offered a platform for studio sessions,  hardware workshops, movie screenings, art exhibitions, in-store performances by top record labels and more exclusive events – for instance Music talks; Q&A sessions with experienced performers and EDM insiders. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for electronic music fans to get all the needed information and insight, and get up close and personal with top professionals in unusual venues (roof top terraces, clothing stores, cinema’s or even a container, right in the middle of the town). This year’s ADE Playground was more elaborate than ever before; the best-ever opportunity for man to engage, learn and liaise with like-minded individuals.

Melkweg cinema hosted a selection of new musical documentaries and films which provided a deep, insightful look at topics such as how producers control the crowd and induce trance-like sensations, how house music ruled New York city back in the day, and how the rave scene developed and got people’s bpm racing in the early ‘90s.

Native, Ableton and Pioneer showcase at ADE Playground, called all gearheads and softwear junkies to show them how it’s done. From budding bedroom producers to experienced performers, all attendants had the rare chance to find out about latest developments in music technology, sample some of the best gear available, meet the team behind everyone’s favorite machines and take precious advice from tech companies’ leading experts and famed artists.

As if those weren’t enough to make those five days an EDM bliss for music lovers, ADE also offered a full program of daytime conferences, making the event the utimate platform for critical dialogue and debate in the field of electronic music.  ADE conferences included ADE Pro, Hard Dance Event (HDE) focusing on the harder styles in dance music, ADE Next for aspiring producers and musicians, and finally ADE University, for students eager to learn about the realities of working in the entertainment industry from masterly professionals and mentors. Through ADE University, ADE launched the ADE Global Intern Program a great initiative giving talented students the opportunity to kick-start their careers in the world’s foremost EDM companies. Conference guests included Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Richie Hawtin, Tiesto and many more.

And there is even more (yes, the Dutch make this possible). Contrary to the - quite biased and narrow-minded - belief of EDM haters that “it’s all about money and beguiling people with those mental bpm’s”, this year’s ADE kept several spiteful mouths shut, gracefully underlining the ethical aspect of the gathering. It collaborated with ID&T and organized ADE Green, an afternoon filled with interactive panels, discussions and debates on sustainability and the coupling of EDM with the environmental protection. The aim was to inculcate sensitivity to green issues and spread awareness among party-goers, as well as to provide professional information about the need, methods and advantages of integrating sustainability into lifestyle and business. Attendants had the chance to see presentations and case studies from leading experts, focusing on the problems, the solutions and the best practices; more specifically on the many green opportunities that artists and management can get involved in, and how they can inspire their fans to do the same. In the effort to promote environmental-friendly ways of holding musical gatherings, ADE Green even integrated the celebration of sustainable festival food. An incredibly thoughtful and inspiring initiative that makes the abbreviation of EDM fit to imply Environmental Dance Music.

Talking about food, ADE satisfied people’s hunger for creativity figuratively and literally. A really neat and smart feature of ADE was the Native Instrument’s Cookery School, where EDM’s most prominent performers demonstrated their mixing skills behind  the kitchen counter instead of the DJ booth. Giving their fans the chance to see them creating in a more ‘personal’ space and manner, the artists showed that creativity - and Art for that matter - is not a way to do specific things, but rather something you live by and dress all your activities with.

The list of ADE goodies and delights can go on and on until ADE 2014, when the major event  is undisputedly going to thrive again. Taking all these under consideration,  it wouldn’t be an overstatement saying that ADE is a genuine Heaven on Earth not only for music lovers, but also for people involved in business & technology, environmental engineers, keen observers of social trends and generally anyone who feels creative and seeks inspiration along with information. So stay tuned for next year’s ADE and make sure you get your tickets in time; the events are sold out - for obvious reasons - in the blink of an eye.

2,156

300,000

5,000

Επισκέπτες του Playground

7,500

Clubs & venues

115

Events

300

Δημοσιογράφοι και media

460

317

75

Μερικά από τα ονόματα που έστειλαν πολλά ζευγάρια παπούτσια στα σκουπίδια, ήταν: Adam Beyer (SE), Afrojack (NL), Armin van Buuren (NL), Black Coffee (ZA), Calvin Harris (GB), Carl Cox (GB), Carl Craig (US), Chris Liebing (DE), Chuckie (NL), Danny Tenaglia (US), David Guetta (FR), DJ Shadow (US), Goldfish (ZA), Gui Boratto (BR), Guy Gerber (IL), Henrik Schwarz (DE), Joris Voorn (NL), Laurent Garnier (FR), Maceo Plex (US), Martyn (NL), Maya Jane Coles (GB), Michael Mayer (DE), Nina Kraviz (RU), Paul Oakenfold (GB), Pete Tong (GB), Richie Hawtin (CA), Seth Troxler (US), Solomun (DE), Tiësto (NL) Tom Trago (NL) – και άλλοι.
