“Maceo Plex is on a quest to fulfill his need to inject feeling and funk into the world, and he's already proving to be quite productive.” Eric a.k.a. Maetrik talks to UrbanStyleMag about his new label Ellum Audio and our greatest love…Music!

Tell us a little about your musical development and how you got into music.
I come from a pretty traditional Cuban household where there was music playing 24 hours a day. But surprisingly I never got into the salsa that my parents were into and I fell in love with Miami Bass and electro in the 80s. Also loved New Wave synth pop…so naturally when I heard House and Techno in the late 80s/ early 90s I was hooked. I started buying records in 92, got my first turntable in 93 and was hooked after that. Now I see myself getting a lot of influence from music when I started, but somehow finding a way to update it and make it fresh for today.

Where does the name Maceo Plex come from?
Believe it or not…I didn't really get it from Maceo Parker. My fiancée had a cat named Maceo, and I had already used the name Plex for a project so I put the two together and it worked perfectly. Until shortly before people asked me if I got it from the famous funk jazz musician Maceo Parker.

Is Maceo Plex the house-funk alter ego of Maetrik?
I don't consider them alter egos really. They are both me and represent my mood. At the moment I’ve been really happy and feeling a lot of love so it's been pouring into my music. I'm also getting older so I’ve been feeling a need to slow down and just groove.

Tell us a few things about your new achievement, Ellum Audio…
Very exciting that I finally got around to getting it going. I have a very clear vision of the future of house, disco, and techno so Ellum is a good platform to seek out that music and present it to the world. We just got started and currently Christine (my manager) and I run it. But we've also enlisted the help of our friend Danny Daze who's a huge music hustler. Plus we have a really great label Manager that also runs Visionquest, CR, and Hot Creations. So the team is assembled and we plan to really make some great things happen in 2012! I started it off by doing 001, and 002 is by the legendary Dj Gregory under the name Bazar. Amazing stuff planned.

What excites you about electronic music at the moment?
Experimentation within DEEP HOUSE MUSIC. There's been experimentation within techno, electronica, and electro for years…but Deep House became a bit stagnant after the huge Mannheim House explosion.. Now there are so many artists bringing new ways of creating new and soulful house music. It's exciting for sure.

“Ο Maceo Plex προσπαθεί να εκπληρώσει την ανάγκη του να δώσει συναίσθημα και μια δόση funk στον κόσμο και ηδη αποδεικνύει ότι είναι αρκετά παραγωγικός”. Ο Eric, γνωστός και ως Maetrik, μιλάει στο UrbanStyleMag για την νέα του δισκογραφική εταιρεία, την Ellum Audio, και για την μεγαλύτερή μας αγάπη... την μουσική!

Πες μας λίγα λόγια για την μουσική σου εξέλιξη και για το πως μπήκες στα μουσικά τεκτενόμενα.
Προέρχομαι από ένα αρκετά παραδοσιακό Κουβανέζικο σπίτι, οπου 24 ώρες την ημέρα ακουγόταν μουσική. Όλως παραδόξως, δεν μου άρεσε η salsa, όπως στους δικούς μου και ερωτεύτηκα με την Miami Bass και την Electro την δεκαετία του 80’. Επίσης μου άρεσε πολύ και η New Wave Synth Pop, έτσι φυσικά όταν άκουσα House και Techno στα τέλη του 80’, αρχές 90’ ξετρελάθηκα. Ξεκίνησα να αγοράζω δίσκους από το 92 και αγόρασα τα δικά μου turntables το 93. Από τότε κόλλησα... Ακόμα και τώρα εμπνέομαι από μουσικές που άκουγα όταν ξεκίνησα αλλά προσπαθώ να βρίσκω τρόπο να τις ανανεώνω και να τις διατηρώ φρέσκες για σήμερα.

Από που βγαίνει το Maceo Plex;
Το πιστεύεις ή όχι, πραγματικά δεν το πήρα από τον Maceo Parker! Η αρραβωνιαστικιά μου είχε ένα γάτο, τον Maceo και εγώ είχα χρησιμοποιήσει παλιότερα το Plex για ένα project. Τα έβαλα μαζί και ταίριαξαν άψογα. Μέχρι και πριν λίγο με ρωτούσαν αν το πήρα από τον διάσημο τζαζίστα Maceo Parker.

Ο Maceo Plex είναι το house-funk alter ego του Maetrik;
Δεν τους θεωρώ alter egos, πραγματικά. Και οι δύο αντιπροσωπεύουν εμένα, ανάλογα την διάθεσή μου. Αυτήν την περίοδο είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος και δέχομαι πολλή αγάπη, συνεπώς αυτό βγαίνει και στην μουσική μου. Έπειτα, μεγαλώνω και νιώθω την ανάγκη να ηρεμήσω λίγο και απλά να νιώσω το groove.

Πες μας για το νέο σου επίτευγμα, την Ellum Audio…
Πολύ συναρπαστικό που επίτελους πήρα την απόφαση να το κάνω. Έχω ένα πολύ σαφές όραμα για το μέλλον της House, της Disco και της Techno, έτσι η Ellum είναι μια καλή πλατφόρμα για να αναζητήσω αυτή την μουσική και να την παρουσιάσω στον κόσμο. Αυτή την περίοδο την διοικούμε η Christine, η manager μου, και εγώ με την πολύτιμη βοήθεια του φίλου μας του Danny Daze, μιας τεράστιας μουσικής φιγούρας. Πλέον έχουμε έναν πραγματικά καταπληκτικό Label Manager, ο οποίος τρέχει επίσης τις Visionquest, CR, και Hot Creations. Η ομάδα είναι μαζεμένη και σχεδιάζουμε κάποια πολύ όμορφα πράγματα για το 2012! Κυκλοφόρησα ήδη το 001 και το 002 είναι από τον θρυλικό Dj Gregory, με το ψευδόνυμο Bazar. Έχουν προγραμματιστεί καταπληκτικά πράγματα!

Τι σε συναρπάζει σε σχέση με την ηλεκτρονική μουσική αυτή τη χρονική στιγμή;
Ο πειραματισμός με την Deep House. Υπάρχει, εδώ και πολλά χρόνια πειραματισμός με την Techno, την Electronica και την Electro, αλλά η Deep House έμεινε στάσιμη μετά την τεράστια έκρηξη της Mannheim House. Πλέον υπάρχουν πολλοί καλλιτέχνες που παρουσιάζουν καινούργιους τρόπους δημιουργίας μιας νέας, πιο μελωδικής House. Είναι σίγουρα συναρπαστικό.

Δύσκολη ερώτηση αλλά πέντε αγαπημένα που μου έρχονται αυτή τη στιγμή είναι:
