Peter Magganaris was born in 1979 in Thessaloniki. He is one of the most promising talents of electronic music in Greece and abroad with releases in labels like Upon you, Apparel, Back and Forth.
We met him and talked about his job and his future plans.

Hello Peter.

Tell us about your first contact with electronic music. At which age was it and when did it start affecting you so much that you stopped being simply a listener but started experimenting with sound and producing music?
The first contact with electronic music was in my early teens, about 14 years ago.

Projects that affected me with their sound were: Orbital, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, the collections of Slow Mo and also Ltj Bukem, Stereo Nova and Massive Attack.

The reason that made me start producing music in the first place was because I wanted to express myself. For many years I was producing music only for myself. I never thought I would start dealing with music professionally.

Recently, one of your tracks, the Give and Receive, was in a compilation of Steve Bug with the name Best Kept Secrets 3 among songs of various and famous artists like Phonique, 9West, Tigerskin and many others. How do you feel about that?
You always feel very good when you get positive feedback from the label that you just sent your demo. Especially when it comes from Steve Bug and Dessous.

After that, you concentrate again and you continue doing what you love.

You have played in well known clubs in Europe. From the Tresor and Watergate in Berlin to the Origami in Venice. Tell us about your experiences there. Is the vibe different abroad than in Greece and what’s the feedback you receive from people when you play abroad?
Abroad, people go to clubs just for dancing. They don’t care if the Dj who plays is well known or not, if he is a resident or a guest.

They dance even if there are 20 or 500 people.

The energy and the vibe you get from people is what push you to do your best.

Many young people have started dealing with the production of electronic music. What do you think about that? Do you believe that it is necessary for someone to have music knowledge in order to build a track or he can reach his production skills to a good level with continuous effort and patience?
The most important thing is the aesthetic of each person, the way he perceives things and the speed with which he understands them.

You may be a virtuoso pianist but you can’t play music without someone imposing you or without having a music sheet in front of you. Usually, people who come from a conservatory lack of inspiration.

I think that in electronic music it is more important to have some knowledge about the programs and the machinery you use and to know basic principles of mixing and production.

If you don’t make your music sound as it should, so that it sounds right in every place you play it, you will achieve only the 50 percent of your target.

You are into other musical projects too such as Info and The Scientifics. Also, you are collaborating with Monsieur Minimal. So many different sounds and projects. What do you love in each of them and in which way you are influenced by them?
What I love in each of them is diversity but also the ability to mix the projects together sometimes.

To me, it would be very boring to produce only one genre of music.

Besides, I love music in all its dimensions.

To conclude, I would like to ask about your future plans and what we may expect from you.
I have some new Eps as Echonomist and a personal ep in Dessous with remix by San Soda. Many collaborations with friends such as the Quell, Cosmic Cowboys and Fog. Various gigs abroad, as I am in working with Clique Bookings. Also, I think it’s time for the fourth album of Info and for many lives with Monsieur Minimal!

Ο Πέτρος Μαγγανάρης γεννήθηκε το 1979 στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Είναι ένα από τα ανερχόμενα ταλέντα της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό με κυκλοφορίες σε labels όπως Upon you, Apparel, Back and Forth.
Τον συναντήσαμε και μίλησε για τη δουλειά του και τα μελλοντικά του σχέδια.

Μιλησε μας λίγο για την πρώτη σου επαφή με την ηλεκτρονική μουσική. Σε ποια ηλικία ήταν και τι σε επηρέασε τόσο ώστε να ασχοληθείς με την μουσική αυτή όχι απλά σαν ακροατής αλλά και σαν παραγωγός ;
H πρώτη επαφή με την ηλεκτρονική μουσική έγινε στην εφηβεία μου, πριν 14 περίπου χρόνια. Τα projects που με συγκίνησαν με τον ήχο τους ήταν οι: Orbital, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, οι συλλογες Slow Mo, o Ltj Bukem, οι Στερεο Νοβα, ο Tricky και οι Massive Attack.

Ο λόγος που ήθελα να ασχοληθώ με την ηλεκτρονική μουσική ήταν γιατί ήθελα να εκφραστώ. Αρκέτα χρόνια έκανα μουσική μόνο για μένα, ποτέ δεν πίστευα ότι θα έφτανα σε σημείο να ασχοληθώ με την μουσική επαγγελματικά.

Πρόσφατα, ένα από τα κομμάτια σου, το Give and Receive, βρέθηκε σε ένα compilation του Steve Bug με την ονομασία Best Kept Secrets 3 ανάμεσα σε κομμάτια γνωστών καλλιτεχνών όπως Phonique, 9West, Tigerskin και πολλών άλλων. Πώς νιώθεις για αυτό ;

Πάντα αισθάνεσαι όμορφα όταν παίρνεις θετικό feedback από το label στο οποίο μόλις έστειλες demo, πόσο μάλλον όταν πρόκειται για τον Steve Bug και την dessous...

Μετά, συγκεντρώνεσαι πάλι και συνέχιζεις να κάνεις αυτό που αγαπάς.

Έχεις παίξει σε πολύ γνωστά clubs της Ευρώπης. Από το Tresor και το Watergate του Βερολίνου μέχρι το Origami στην Βενετία. Πες μας λίγο για αυτές τις εμπειρίες σου. Το κλίμα που επικρατεί στο εξωτερικό είναι διαφορετικό από αυτό της Ελλάδας και ποια είναι η ανταπόκριση του κόσμου όταν παίζεις εκτός αυτής ;
Στο εξωτερικό, ο κόσμος πηγαίνει στα club για να χορέψει. Δεν τους νοιάζει αν ο dj που παίζει είναι γνωστός ή όχι, αν είναι ο resident ή ο guest..

Μπορούν να χορέψουν είτε είναι 20 άτομα είτε 500.

Η ενέργεια που λαμβάνεις απο τον κόσμο είναι αυτή που σε ωθεί να δώσεις τον καλύτερο σου εαυτό..

Πολύς νέος κόσμος ασχολείται πλέον με την παραγωγή ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής. Τί γνώμη έχεις για αυτό; Πιστεύεις ότι κάποιος χρειάζεται απαραίτητα να έχει γνώσεις μουσικής για να ασχοληθεί ή μπορεί απλά με συνεχή προσπάθεια και υπομονή να φτάσει τις παραγωγές του σε ένα πολύ καλό επίπεδο ;
Το πιο σημαντικό είναι η αισθητική του καθενός, ο τρόπος που αντιλαμβάνεται τα πράγματα και η ταχύτητα που τα αντιλαμβάνεται...

Μπορεί να είσαι δεξιοτέχνης πιανίστας, αλλά να μην μπόρεις να παίξεις τίποτα χώρις κάποιον να σου υπαγορεύει ή χωρίς να έχεις μια παρτιτούρα μπροστά σου. Συνήθως οι «ωδειακοί» στερούνται της έμπνευσης.
Νομίζω ότι στην ηλεκτρονική μουσική πιο σημαντικό είναι να έχεις κάποια τεχνογνωσία των προγραμμάτων και των μηχανήματων που χρησιμοποιείς καθώς και να γνωρίζεις βασικές αρχες μίξης και παραγωγής. Αν δεν κάνεις την μουσική σου να ακουστεί όπως πρέπει, έτσι ώστε να ακούγεται σωστά, όπου και να την παίξεις, τότε έχεις πετύχει το 50 τοις εκατό του στόχου σου.

Ασχολείσαι και με άλλα μουσικά project όπως είναι οι Info και οι Scientifics. Επίσης, συνεργάζεσαι και με τον Monsieur Minimal. Τόσοι πολλοί διαφορετικοί ήχοι και διαφορετικά project. Τί αγαπάς σε κάθε τι από αυτά και πώς σε επηρεάζουν ;
Αυτό που αγαπάω στον καθένα είναι η διαφορετικότητα του αλλά και οτι μερικές φορές μπλέκω τα projects μεταξύ τους. Θα μου φαινόταν πολύ βαρετό να έκανα ένα είδος μουσικής μόνο...Άλλωστε μου αρέσει η μουσική σε όλες τις διαστάσεις της.

Κλείνοντας θα ήθελα να σε ρωτήσω ποιά είναι τα σχέδια σου για το μέλλον και τι να περιμένουμε από σένα ;
Κάποια καινούρια Eps σαν Echonomist αλλά και το προσωπικό μου Εp στη Dessous με remix απο τον San Soda. Πολλές συνεργασίες με φίλους όπως τον Quell, Cosmic Cowboys, Fog... Επίσης, διάφορα gigs στο εξωτερικό καθως ξεκίνησα να συνεργάζομαι με την Clique Bookings.

Νομίζω πως είναι καιρός και για το τέταρτο άλμπουμ των Info καθώς και πολλά live με τον Monsieur Minimal!
